Breakaway and mostly unrecognized states often struggle economically, not through any wrongdoing of their own but as a result of the geopolitical pressures exerted upon them. In the first of a 2-parter, we look at Abkhazia, which broke away from Georgia, and Transnistria, which broke away from Moldova, to learn more about the quagmires they find themselves in.
